Type Inference: How does your compiler know the type of an expression? Stefan Schulze Frielinghaus In some programming languages you have to specify the type of a variable/object as e.g. in C/C++ “int a = 42; float b = 23f;”, but in some others the compiler infers the type, e.g. in Scala “val a = 42, val b = 23.0”. We will have a look at an essential algorithm, how compilers infer types. What problems can arise and what modern compilers use. ⇒ Having fun with types!
